Sonic (S): a rebound without a revenue turnaround
Sonic's token gained about 27% in a month. The move looks like a reversal on the chart. The network data tell a different story: Bitcoin explains almost all of the gain, TVL lagged the token, and the valuation relative to fees became more demanding.
First, a naming warning. This article covers Sonic Labs and its S token, formerly Fantom. Sonic SVM and its SONIC token are a different network and a different asset. Exchange notices and price pages for SONIC do not describe S.

The market carried the rebound
The token did rise. The question is what produced the move.
We estimated the sensitivity of S to Bitcoin from 90 daily returns. The beta was 1.252. Beta is a statistical estimate of how strongly an asset has moved when the reference market moved. A beta above one means that S tended to amplify Bitcoin's daily changes during this window.
Over the latest 30-day window, S returned 26.09% and BTC returned 20.65%. Multiplying the Bitcoin return by the estimated beta explains 25.85 percentage points of the S move. The residual, called realised alpha here, was only +0.24 percentage points.
The longer window is less flattering. Over 90 days, S returned 0.85% while BTC returned 27.30%. The beta-adjusted market move was 34.18 percentage points, leaving realised alpha of -33.33 percentage points.

This is not proof that Bitcoin caused every move in S. The regression's R-squared was only 0.264, so it explained 26.4% of S's daily variation. The result is narrower: the monthly gain does not provide evidence of an independent Sonic rerating, while the 90-day relative result remains deeply negative. The calculations use Binance daily candles for S and BTC.
The token became more expensive relative to the business
P/Fees divides market capitalisation by the current annualised pace of fees. It is a rough multiple, not a forecast and not cash available to token holders. The same definition is useful across comparable networks because it asks one consistent question: how much market value is assigned to one dollar of fees.
Sonic's annualised fee pace rose from $1.43 million to $1.649 million, or 15.3%. Market capitalisation rose faster, from $90.8 million to $115.785 million, or 27.5%. P/Fees therefore expanded from 63.7x to 70.2x, an increase of 10.2%.

At unchanged fees and token supply, parity with Solana's 14.1x P/Fees would place S at about $0.00597, or 80.0% below the snapshot price. A month earlier, the gap was 74%. Parity with the 43.0x median of the six comparison networks excluding Sonic would place S near $0.01825, or 38.8% lower.
These are mechanical parity calculations, not target prices. They show that the token did not become cheaper relative to the measured business during the rebound. The fee series comes from DefiLlama, while market values come from CoinGecko.
TVL rose, but it lagged the token
Sonic's dollar TVL rose from $14.47 million to $16.43 million, or 13.5%. Over the same comparison, the token price rose 27.9%.

TVL is the dollar value of assets deposited in applications. If part of that collateral is denominated in S or closely follows it, a higher S price lifts reported TVL even without new deposits. When TVL rises only half as fast as the token, the dollar increase alone is not evidence of fresh capital entering the network.
The exact flow cannot be recovered from aggregate TVL because protocols hold different assets and DefiLlama adapters can count them differently. Still, the price-adjusted signal points to weaker underlying capital than the headline dollar gain suggests. The network also failed to regain share: Sonic's part of global DeFi TVL slipped from 0.01900% to 0.01877%. The comparison uses DefiLlama's chain snapshot and Sonic history.
Fewer transactions do not automatically mean fewer users
The Sonic RPC count for 7 September was 96,812 transactions, down 28.3% from about 135 thousand in the August review. The same scan found 7,041 unique senders and 7,909 unique addresses across senders and recipients.
There is no comparable August address count, so no reliable percentage change in active addresses can be stated. The combination of fewer transactions and thousands of distinct senders is consistent with some repetitive automated traffic disappearing. The August block sample supports that interpretation: the top 50 senders produced 48.9% of traffic, while one contract received 16.3% of all transactions.
It remains an interpretation, not proof. The September scan did not repeat the concentration study, and a lower transaction count can have other causes. The careful conclusion is that the decline is not enough on its own to establish a collapse in user activity. It may reflect a cleaner mix with fewer bot and keeper calls. The current count comes from a full-day scan through the official Sonic RPC.

Development: 35 commits in August
The stop threshold is fewer than 5 commits per month for 2 consecutive months, or fewer than 3 authors. August had 35 commits and 4 authors. From 1 to 8 September, the repository had 6 commits and 3 authors. The latest confirmed change was dated 7 September. The threshold has not been crossed, although the author count has reached its boundary.
SonicStrategy: no large exit from the disclosed address
The threshold is a transfer of more than 50 million S to an exchange. Sonic Labs confirms the ownership of the inspected multisig in its company update. The address sent 731,765.509 S to an unlabelled address. That is 68 times smaller than the threshold and is not a confirmed exchange transfer. The check covers only the publicly disclosed address, not every possible company wallet.
Aave remains in dollar terms, but the wind-down entered implementation
On 8 September, Aave V3 still held $5.394 million on Sonic, compared with $4.73 million a month earlier. The higher dollar value, however, masked declines in the main assets measured in native units: WETH fell 9.35%, USDC 2.52%, wS 8.95%, and stS 3.17%.
The organisational status changed too. Aave Labs said on 1 September that deprecation of low-adoption assets had entered implementation. The formal AIP was still being prepared. The original ARFC calls for freezing the four Sonic reserves and reducing supply and borrow caps to 1.
Both statements are therefore true. Aave has not yet left in dollar terms. Its managed wind-down is no longer only under discussion.
Engineering continues, commercial disclosure does not
The core repository recorded 35 commits from 4 authors in August. From 1 to 8 September it recorded 6 commits from 3 authors. The latest commit at the cutoff was dated 7 September. This is active maintenance, not an abandoned codebase. The evidence is available in the GitHub API for August, September, and the latest commit.
Communication has been narrower than development. Sonic Labs published 5 blog posts during the month, all about V2.2 engineering: an overview, bundled transactions, delegated signing, sponsored fees and higher contract limits. Those posts describe technical work. They do not disclose the owners, milestones or stop conditions promised for the four commercial directions: Frax and Circle payments, Spawn agents, perpetuals plus real-world assets, and prediction markets.
The CEO's deadline remains Q4 2026, so the commitment was not overdue on 8 September. It was also not delivered early. The distinction matters: the team is shipping technology, but there is still no new evidence that the technology has become a stronger revenue engine. The deadline and the four directions come from the CEO's original statement.
The founder's attention has an opportunity cost
Andre Cronje is building Flying Tulip outside Sonic Labs. A month ago, the prior review cited about $70 million of TVL for that project. On 8 September, DefiLlama showed $13.655 million across Flying Tulip Lend and ftUSD: $11.381 million plus $2.274 million.
The formal decline from the old headline is 80.5%, but the comparison is not like for like. The earlier methodology was not recorded and may have mixed TVL with PUT backing or assets under management. The current figure is reproducible from Flying Tulip Lend and ftUSD; the old base is not reproducible on the same basis.
The defensible conclusion is limited. Founder attention outside Sonic has an opportunity cost, but Flying Tulip's own measured footprint also contracted. Its existence is not evidence by itself that value has successfully migrated from Sonic to a larger project.
Why this does not look like a dying network
The negative evidence is substantial: S rose with the market, P/Fees increased, Sonic did not regain DeFi share, Aave moved its wind-down into implementation, and new commercial revenue remains undisclosed.
The counterevidence should not be hidden. Sonic holds $149.203 million in stablecoins. Average daily fees over 30 full days rose from $3,915 to $4,519, or 15.4%. DEX volume was $970,557 over the latest 24 hours, while the 30-day average was $1.180 million per day. Development continues. None of the four canaries fired.
The precise description on 8 September is this: Sonic is operating, but the token's monthly rebound does not establish a business recovery.
What to monitor next
The same four canaries still separate deterioration, stability and measurable improvement.
Stablecoins: $96 million
The current balance is $149.203 million, leaving $53.203 million above the lower boundary. A break below $96 million would mean that even the capital parked on the network is leaving. The source is DefiLlama's Sonic stablecoin series.
Fees: $1,500 and $15,000 per day
The 30-day average is $4,519 per day. Below $1,500 would mark renewed economic contraction. Above $15,000 for 30 consecutive days would be measurable evidence of a revenue turnaround rather than a short spike.
Core development: 5 commits and 3 authors
Fewer than 5 commits per month for 2 consecutive months, or a fall below 3 authors, would indicate that engineering activity is thinning. August remained well above the commit threshold, while the September author count sat exactly on the boundary.
SonicStrategy: 50 million S
A transfer of more than 50 million S from a disclosed company wallet to a labelled exchange would turn a latent supply concern into an observable event. Smaller transfers and unlabelled recipients require separate investigation and should not be described as exchange inflows without evidence.
Conclusion: the network is alive, the business turnaround is not visible yet
Sonic's monthly rebound was real in price and weak in independent evidence. The beta model attributes almost all of the move to Bitcoin. TVL and fees grew more slowly than the token. P/Fees expanded, and the distance to comparable valuations widened.
The counterevidence is also real. Stablecoins increased, fees stayed above the failure threshold, development remained active, and no large SonicStrategy exchange transfer was found on the disclosed address. Aave's dollar balance has not disappeared, even though its managed wind-down moved into implementation.
The resulting picture is not a dead network and not a confirmed reversal. It is a live engineering project with unresolved commercial execution, a more demanding valuation, and four clear measurements for the next review. This research describes the data as of 8 September 2026. It does not tell the reader what market decision to make.
